Level: Level 3.

Accreditation: This course is CPD certified.

Course Aims

This course is mandatory, where health and social care providers are registered with CQC, for all staff providing care and support for autistic individuals.

This eLearning course is designed to give you an understanding of autism, your role as a health and social care worker, and the expectations in Health and Social Care.

The course begins by explaining what autism is, the terms used to describe autism and autism spectrum profiles.  This module also looks at the possible causes of autism, genetic and environmental factors, and how it develops.

Module 2 explains the signs of autism and how to recognise traits. It discusses the ‘triad of impairments’ which are three areas of difficulty used to describe and diagnose autism. Besides the triad, this module also looks at other experiences autistic individuals may have such as sensory sensitivity, problems with motor skills and anxiety.

In the final stage of the course you will learn about some of the responsibilities necessary for health and social care workers. This includes looking at the legislation that has an impact on the work including appropriate strategies to support autistic individuals.

Guided Learning Hours: up to 1 hour, dependent on learner’s skills and abilities.
