Course Description:

This Dysphasia Awareness course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff to develop the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals with dysphasia (language impairment). The course focuses on understanding the causes of dysphasia, recognising its impact on communication, and implementing strategies to provide effective support.

Learners will gain insight into the different types of dysphasia, how it affects speech, language, and comprehension, and practical ways to improve communication and quality of life for individuals. The course also emphasises the importance of patience, dignity, and a person-centred approach in care settings.

Topics include:

  • What dysphasia is, including its causes and the types of language impairments (expressive, receptive, and global dysphasia).
  • How dysphasia impacts speech, comprehension, reading, and writing.
  • How to recognise the signs and severity of dysphasia.
  • Practical strategies to support communication, including verbal and non-verbal techniques.
  • The importance of patience, active listening, and providing care with dignity and respect.
  • When to escalate concerns and refer to speech and language specialists for additional support.
  • The role of carers in fostering confidence and independence for individuals with dysphasia.
