Course Aims

This eLearning course aims to increase and refresh your knowledge about working with individuals who display ‘behaviours that challenge’. Please note that this course was formally known as Challenging Behaviour.
It begins by defining the term ‘behaviour that challenges’, the functions of these behaviours and the reasons that individuals may display them. The course then explains the legal and government policy framework for dealing with behaviour that challenges, in particular, the use of restrictive interventions and positive behavioural support (PBS). After this, the course describes the context within which these behaviours may occur; including environmental factors, slow and fast triggers and the role of reinforcement. The use of proactive, active and reactive interventions are then explored, as is the importance of supporting an individual and others following any incidents. Finally, you will be supported to analyse the antecedent, behaviour and consequences of the behaviour using the ABC model of working and helped to understand the importance of reflection in improving the outcomes when working with behaviour that challenges.
