Course Aims

This introductory course is designed to give health and social care workers the underpinning knowledge and understanding of positive behaviour support, and their responsibilities relating to this. It is suitable for managers and workers in health and social care organisations.

The course begins initially by identifying what ‘Behaviours that Challenge’ are and moves on to define positive behaviour support. This module also outlines the purpose for functional assessments and support plans, which are supported by ten key PBS principles. The principles identify the Values, Theory and Processes of PBS.

Module 2 explores best practice for positive behaviour support and directs learners on how to undertake functional assessments and develop behaviour support plans. It explores proactive, active and reactive strategies looking at techniques to prevent behaviours that challenge occurring, prevent any behaviour escalating and deal with behaviour if it occurs.

The final stage of the course looks at the legislation / regulation associated with this area; Mental Capacity Act and DoLS, Mental Health Act, Health and Safety at Work Act and the Human Rights Act. This module also includes details for how CQC, care inspectorate in England, inspects PBS and their expectations.
