This Enteral Feeding Awareness training course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff who provide care to individuals requiring enteral feeding. The course focuses on understanding the purpose of enteral feeding, the different types of feeding tubes, and how to provide safe and effective support to ensure nutritional needs are met.

Learners will gain practical knowledge of tube feeding techniques, recognising complications, and maintaining hygiene and dignity throughout the process. The course also highlights the importance of promoting comfort, ensuring safety, and following clinical guidelines when supporting individuals with enteral feeding.

Topics include:

  • What enteral feeding is and why it is used.
  • The different types of feeding tubes, including nasogastric (NG), gastrostomy (PEG), and jejunostomy tubes.
  • Safe and effective techniques for administering enteral feeds, water and / or medications.
  • The importance of maintaining daily care to maximise hygiene and prevent infections or other complications during enteral feeding.
  • Recognising potential complications, such as tube blockages, dislodgement, and aspiration, and knowing when to escalate concerns.
  • How to provide care with dignity and respect, ensuring the comfort and emotional well-being of individuals.
  • Practical strategies for troubleshooting common issues with enteral feeding equipment.
