All employers have a legal requirement to provide their employees with a relevant risk assessment to ensure safe working practices. This is especially important when undertaking complex moving and handling tasks with a person.

A Person-Centred Moving & Handling Risk Assessment includes:

A review of the individual’s manual handling needs, including the current methods and equipment used (the individual is required to be present during the assessment).

Discussion about new methods and aids, which may improve the individual’s experience of
being assisted to move.

Balanced decision-making, where the wishes of the individual are considered along with the
needs of the employees, is used to identify any recommended changes.

A handling plan is produced, that records the exact methods that should be used to support
the individual to move.

If new equipment is required, with consent, the Assessor can liaise with the local statutory Occupational Therapy team and a follow-up visit can be arranged to evaluate its effectiveness in practice as required.

Upon completion of the risk assessment, you will be provided with a copy of the assessment and a complete moving and handling personalised plan for you to keep and use as best practice guidance for your employees.

How Long Does the Assessment Take and Where Will it Happen?

Initially the Assessor will visit the Individual’s home for two-hours, followed by a write up of the plan. A second visit will be arranged if required.

How Often Should the Risks and Plan Be Reviewed?

The plan should be reviewed annually and the Assessor will advise if any updates are required to be made to the personalised handling plan.
