Course Description:

This Muscular Dystrophy Awareness training course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff to develop an understanding of muscular dystrophy (MD). The course provides insight into the causes, types, symptoms, and progression of the condition, along with practical strategies to support individuals living with MD and their families.

Learners will explore the physical, emotional, and social challenges associated with muscular dystrophy and learn how to deliver care that promotes dignity, independence, and quality of life. The course also highlights the role of assistive devices and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in managing the condition.

Topics include:

• Understand what muscular dystrophy is, including its causes and different types (e.g., Duchenne, Becker, Myotonic)
• Recognise the symptoms of muscular dystrophy and how they impact mobility, communication, and daily living
• Learn practical strategies to support individuals with muscular dystrophy, including physical and emotional care
• Understand the importance of person-centred care that respects the individual’s dignity and preferences
• Gain insight into the role of assistive devices and technology in enhancing mobility and independence
• Recognise the emotional and social impact of muscular dystrophy on individuals and their families, and provide effective support
• Understand the role of a multidisciplinary team in managing muscular dystrophy care effectively.
• Identify when to escalate concerns or seek specialist support.
