Course Description:

This Catheter Care training course is designed for carers involved in the daily support and well-being of individuals with an in-situ urinary catheter. The primary goal is to enhance participants’ understanding of urinary catheterisation, its associated risks, and their professional responsibilities in delivering person-centred, respectful care.

Through this course, participants will learn techniques for handling, emptying, and changing catheter bags, as well as maintaining stringent infection control measures. 

Topics include:

  • Understand the purpose and function of a urinary catheter.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of catheterisation.
  • Recognise the key reasons for catheter use and related care needs.
  • Implement effective infection control practices to minimise health risks.
  • Safely handle, empty, and change catheter bags.
  • Troubleshoot common catheter-related issues and understand when to seek additional support.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records of catheter care and fluid balance.
  • Provide care in a manner that respects privacy, dignity, and the individual’s preferences.
