This Diabetes Awareness with (optional) Medication course is designed for carers working in health and social care settings. It provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills to understand diabetes, recognise signs and symptoms, and safely manage medication, particularly insulin. Participants will learn how to maintain safety and compliance while supporting individuals with diabetes in their daily lives.
Topics include:
Understand Diabetes:
Learn what diabetes is, the differences between Type I and Type II, and how it affects the body.
Signs and Symptoms:
Recognise early indicators of both hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, understanding when and how to seek help.
Insulin Awareness:
Gain an understanding of various insulin types, safe administration techniques, and the importance of correct dosage as prescribed.
Blood Glucose Monitoring:
Develop practical skills in blood sugar testing, including correct use of a glucometer and interpreting results.
Infection Control and Safety:
Understand how to maintain proper infection control, safe sharps disposal, and uphold health and safety standards.
Management and Treatment:
Learn strategies for managing daily sugar levels, including dietary and exercise recommendations alongside medication, and how to prevent acute conditions like ketoacidosis and long-term complications.
Documentation and Communication:
Explore effective methods for recording observations and reporting concerns to healthcare professionals.
Practical Application:
Practice with demonstration equipment such as dummy insulin pens and discuss scenarios to build confidence before workplace supervision.
