Course Description:

This Stoma Care training course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff to develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide effective, person-centred care for individuals with a stoma. The course focuses on understanding the physical, emotional, and social aspects of stoma care, ensuring individuals’ dignity, comfort, and independence are prioritised.

Learners will explore the different types of stomas, practical techniques for stoma management, and how to address common challenges such as skin irritation and leakage. The course also emphasises communication, empathy, and providing holistic support to individuals living with a stoma.

Topics include:

  • Understand what a stoma is, including the different types (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy) and their purposes.
  • Gain knowledge of the reasons why individuals may require a stoma.
  • Learn practical skills for stoma care, including changing and cleaning stoma appliances (Practical included if training is being delivered in person)
  • Recognise and manage common stoma-related challenges, such as skin irritation and leakage.
  • Understand infection control practices and how to maintain hygiene in stoma care.
  • Develop effective communication skills to provide emotional and practical support to individuals with a stoma.
  • Promote independence and dignity in stoma care routines.
  • Recognise when to escalate concerns or seek specialist advice for stoma-related issues.
