Course Description:

This Stroke Awareness training course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff to develop a comprehensive understanding of strokes, including their causes, symptoms, and long-term effects. The course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills needed to support individuals recovering from a stroke and manage associated challenges effectively.

Learners will explore the physical, cognitive, and emotional impact of strokes, focusing on person-centred approaches to care that promote recovery, independence, and quality of life. The course also covers risk factors, early warning signs, and the importance of timely medical intervention.

Topics include:

  • Understand what a stroke is, including the different types (ischaemic, haemorrhagic, and transient ischaemic attack).
  • Recognise the common causes and risk factors associated with strokes.
  • Identify the early warning signs of a stroke and the importance of acting quickly (FAST).
  • Understand the physical, cognitive, and emotional effects of a stroke on individuals.
  • Learn strategies to support individuals during recovery, including mobility, communication, and daily living.
  • Gain knowledge of rehabilitation approaches and the role of a multidisciplinary team in stroke care.
  • Develop effective communication skills to provide emotional and practical support to individuals and their families.
  • Understand how to promote independence and dignity while supporting individuals living with the aftereffects of a stroke.
