Course Description:
This Syringe Driver Awareness training course is designed for Nurses who work with individuals requiring continuous subcutaneous infusion via a syringe driver. The course provides essential knowledge and practical understanding of the purpose, operation, and safe management of syringe drivers in palliative and end-of-life care settings.
Learners will explore the principles of syringe driver use, including medication administration, troubleshooting, and recognising potential complications. The training also emphasises maintaining person-centred care, promoting comfort, and adhering to legal and organisational guidelines.
Topics include:
- Understand what a syringe driver is, its purpose, and the conditions it is commonly used for.
- Gain knowledge of medications typically administered via syringe drivers and their indications.
- Understand how to check drug compatibility and draw up medications safely and effectively.
- Learn how to prepare, set up, and monitor syringe drivers safely.
- Recognise potential complications, such as occlusions, site reactions, or equipment malfunctions, and know how to respond effectively.
- Understand infection control practices and safe handling of equipment.
- Develop practical skills to troubleshoot syringe drivers and ensure they function correctly.
- Provide person-centred care that promotes comfort, dignity, and independence for individuals receiving syringe driver support.
- Understand the importance of accurate documentation and communication within a multidisciplinary team.
