Course Description:

This oral and nasal Suction training course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff responsible for managing airway clearance in individuals with compromised respiratory function. The training focuses on the safe and effective use of suctioning techniques for both oral and nasal (nare/ tip) suctioning, ensuring comfort and safety for individuals requiring airway management.

Learners will gain essential knowledge and practical skills, including when and how to perform oral and nasal suctioning, the correct use of suctioning equipment, and recognising and managing complications. The course also emphasises maintaining dignity, adhering to infection control practices, and complying with current regulations and guidelines.

Topics include:

  • Understand the purpose and principles of oral and nasal suctioning
  • Recognise when to suction and situations that require intervention
  • Learn how to safely perform oral and nasal suctioning procedures using appropriate equipment
  • Identify and respond to potential complications associated with suctioning
  • Understand infection control practices and the importance of maintaining equipment hygiene
  • Develop skills to monitor and assess the individual’s response during and after suctioning
  • Provide person-centred care that ensures dignity, comfort, and respect during suctioning procedures
