Course Description:
This Tracheostomy Care training course is designed for carers, healthcare professionals, and support staff to develop the essential knowledge and practical skills required to care for individuals with a tracheostomy. The course focuses on understanding tracheostomy equipment, maintaining airway patency, and recognising and responding to complications effectively.
Learners will gain confidence in delivering safe and person-centred tracheostomy care, ensuring the individual’s comfort, dignity, and independence are prioritised. The training also covers infection control practices, troubleshooting equipment, and providing emotional support for individuals and their families.
Topics include:
- Understand what a tracheostomy is and the reasons why individuals may require one.
- Learn about the different types of tracheostomy tubes and their functions.
- Gain practical skills for cleaning, changing, and maintaining tracheostomy tubes and stoma sites.
- Understand the importance of infection control in tracheostomy care.
- Recognise and respond to complications, such as blockages, infections, and dislodgement.
- Learn how to perform suctioning safely and effectively to maintain airway patency.
- Develop effective communication skills to provide emotional support and reassurance to individuals and their families.
