Buccal Midazolam
Course Aims:
This E-Learning course is designed to raise your awareness and develop your understanding of Buccal Midazolam, your role as a health and social care worker, and the expectations in Health and Social Care.
The course begins by explaining what Buccal Midazolam is and its availability. This module also looks at different emergency treatments which stop seizures, including Buccal Midazolam, and how to recognise side effects. Safe storage and disposal of Buccal Midazolam are also included in this section.
Module 2 explains what seizures are and when to administer emergency treatments. It looks at triggers that can cause seizures, different seizure types and their signs and symptoms. This module provides information defining ‘status epilepticus’ and how to prevent this by administering emergency treatment. First aid for individuals experiencing seizures is also addressed.
Module 3 looks at how to administer medication, specifically Buccal Midazolam, by ensuring safe medication administration practice by understanding medication rights, administration procedures and the importance of after care. It also addresses specialised medication techniques, including Buccal Administration, and how to give Buccal Midazolam in an emergency.
In the final stage of the course, you will learn about some of the responsibilities necessary for health and social care workers. This includes looking at recording your practice, the guidance available from policy and personal health care plans and the legislation that relates to medication practice.
A downloadable fact sheet and practical observation sheet are available in the Resource section of this course.
