Diabetes Awareness

Course Aims:

This E-Learning course aims to introduce you to the topic of diabetes in Health and Social Care.

The course begins by explaining what diabetes is, the prevalence rates for the different types of diabetes and the possible long term complications. The learner will then be informed about the terms hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia, and the procedures of referring an individual with diabetes to specialist services.

In the second stage, the course outlines the features of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including the possible causes, signs and symptoms and risk factors associated with the conditions. Stage Three of the course focuses on the importance of person-centred support and promoting self-care skills, including how to support individuals to make informed decisions.

The next stage focuses on the importance of nutrition when managing diabetes, including the principles of a balanced diet, how different carbohydrates affect blood glucose level and the role of the nutritional plan.

The course then goes on to explore how different individuals may experience living with diabetes and the impact that the attitudes and behaviours of others may have on an individual with diabetes.

In the penultimate stage, the course focuses on the importance of monitoring physiological effects of diabetes, including blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring and outlines the importance of annual checks for all those individuals living with the condition.

The final stage outlines the links between diabetes and depression, dementia and pregnancy.
