Learning Disabilities

Course Aims:

This course is mandatory, where health and social care providers are registered with CQC, for all staff providing care and support for individuals with learning disabilities.

This eLearning course is designed to give you an understanding of Learning Disability, your role as a health and social care worker, and the expectations in Health and Social Care.

The course begins by explaining what a learning disability is, the causes of learning disabilities and signs to be aware of. This module also looks at how to achieve a diagnosis and the impact it has for the individual and their families plus information about the models of disability.

Module 2 explains the historical aspects of learning disability and how this impacts on present day practice. It looks at the legislation and guidance which have initiated change to the lives of individuals with a learning disability. This module also looks at the key changes, including employment, health care and relationships, in more detail.

The 3rd module focusses on how health and social care workers can support individuals, emphasising the importance of personalisation, empowerment, inclusion and identity. This module explains the communication issues that individuals can face, how carers can support this and the resources available to assist with communication. Behaviours that challenge are identified as a form of communication; this module provides guidance for strategies to manage this including Positive Behaviour support.

The final stage of the course looks at how to support individuals with health and wellbeing. It establishes the causes and risks to ill health for individuals with a learning disability. It includes the importance of health action plans and other health initiatives. Safeguarding and the risks individuals can be exposed to are discussed to provide insight to equip carers to recognise abuse.
